Congratulations on your new veneers! Here are important guidelines to follow to ensure they heal well and provide you with a beautiful smile for years to come.
• Brushing: Continue to brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste. Avoid toothpaste that contains harsh abrasives (including whitening toothpastes).
• Flossing: Floss daily to remove plaque and debris from between the teeth and around the veneers. Use a gentle sawing motion when inserting the floss between the teeth.
• Waterpik: Can be helpful to flush out debris around the veneers. This is to be used in combination with flossing.
• Avoid Hard Foods: For the first few days after veneer placement, avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could potentially damage or dislodge the veneers.
• Be Cautious with Temperature: Sensitivity to hot or cold foods and beverages is common after veneer placement and should be temporary. Use caution until any sensitivity resolves.
• Normal Sensations: It is normal to experience some sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure after getting veneers. This sensitivity usually subsides within a few days to a few weeks. If needed, the use of desensitizing toothpaste may help relieve sensitivity.
• Pain Relief: If you experience discomfort, you may take over-the-counter pain medication as recommended by your dentist.
• No Nail Biting or Teeth Grinding: Avoid habits such as nail biting or teeth grinding (bruxism), as these can damage your veneers. Using a night guard is strongly recommended to protect your veneers.
• Avoid Staining Substances: Minimize consumption of foods and beverages that can stain your teeth, such as coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco products.
• Scheduled Visits: Attend any follow-up appointments scheduled by your dentist to ensure the veneers are settling in and there are no issues.
• Routine Check-Ups: Maintain regular dental check-ups and cleanings every six months. Routine hygiene appointments can help remove staining.
• Custom Mouthguard: If you grind your teeth at night, consider wearing a nightguard provided by your dentist to protect your veneers.
• Be Cautious: Avoid trauma to your veneers. If you participate in sports or activities where your teeth could be at risk (like contact sports), consider wearing a mouthguard.
• Routine Care: Treat your veneers like natural teeth but with extra care. They require regular brushing, flossing, and dental visits to maintain their appearance and health.
Following these post-operative instructions will help ensure the success and longevity of your veneers.
