Oral Sedation Instructions

BEFORE YOUR SEDATION APPOINTMENT

You must arrange to have a “sedation companion”. This person will be responsible for driving you to and from your dental appointment, assisting you into and out of our clinic, remaining with you until you are escorted to the treatment area and remaining with you at home for your recovery period (the rest of the day/evening). They must stay with you for a minimum of 24 hours after the appointment. Before your appointment you will need to sign paperwork and/or make payment for your services. Please make sure your caregiver can help you with these arrangements.

• Arrange for a companion to provide transportation to and from your appointment. DO NOT take a taxi.

DO NOT EAT OR DRINK anything for a minimum of 8 hours prior to your appointment.

DO NOT take any recreational drugs, medicinal marijuana or cannabis 7 days prior to your appointment. This is for your own safety!

DO NOT consume alcoholic beverages 24 hours prior.

DO NOT consume any stimulants (including caffeine, nicotine and narcotics) 24 hours before your appointment.

DO NOT smoke for 24 hours prior.

• If you are breast feeding, please avoid nursing for 24 hours.

We CANNOT sedate you if you have consumed any of the following within 7 days prior to your appointment: Grapefruit Juice, Antacids, St. Johns Wart, Anti-fungal medications, Erythromycin, Tagamet, Cyclosporin, Protease inhibitor, Narcotics, Recreational drugs, Anti-depressants medications.

Discontinuation of any medications must be discussed with your medical doctor and your dentist prior to sedation.

DAY OF YOUR SEDATION APPOINTMENT

• Wear loose fitting clothes which are not restrictive to the neck or arms, a short sleeve shirt so we can place a blood pressure cuff on your arm.

Do not wear jewelry, contact lenses, or high heels to your appointment. Please leave all valuables at home or with your sedation companion (cell phones, wallets, purses, sunglasses).

• If you have asthma please bring your inhaler with you.

Do not operate any motor vehicle or hazardous equipment, make any important decisions, go to work, do any heavy lifting, travel alone, walk on stairs/uneven surfaces, do any physically exerting activities, handle small children for 24 hours after.

Do not take any recreational drugs, medicinal marijuana or cannabis for 24 hours after. This is for your own safety!

Do not consume alcoholic beverages 24 hours after.

Do not consume any stimulants (including caffeine, nicotine and narcotics) 24 hours after.

Do not smoke for 24 hours after your appointment.
