Your dental provider placed a small, medicated powder capsule called ARESTIN® into the infected space(s) between your gums and teeth - these are called periodontal pockets. ARESTIN® is an antibiotic (minocycline) that releases slowly right where it’s needed, over several weeks. It works alongside the deep cleaning your provider just did to fight the bacteria causing your gum disease.
ARESTIN® should not be used by patients who are hypersensitive to minocycline or any other drugs in the tetracycline class. It should not be used by children, nursing women, or pregnant women.
• Avoid using interdental cleaners such as floss, Waterpik and toothpick in the treated area.
• Avoid eating hard, crunchy, or sticky foods (including popcorn, nuts, seeds).
• Do not brush the treated pockets. You may continue brushing the rest of your teeth as usual, but avoid brushing the treated area.
• You may resume using interdental cleaners (floss, Waterpik, toothpick) in the treated sites.
• You may resume brushing as normal.
• Return for your follow-up check in 3-6 months. Your provider may re-treat if needed.
