Congratulations on completing your Invisalign treatment! After finishing Invisalign treatment, wearing a retainer is essential to maintain the alignment of your teeth. Here’s a detailed guide for wear and care.
• Immediately after Invisalign first 3 months: We recommend wearing your retainer full-time (20–22 hours/day), except while eating or brushing, for the first 3 months.
• Months 4–6: You may transition to 12-hour wear, overnight plus hours in the day or evening to total a minimum of 12 hours.
• After 6 months: Wear your retainers every night indefinitely.
• Consistency is key: Skipping wear can allow teeth to shift back to their original positions.
• Insertion: Align the retainer with your teeth and gently push it into place. Avoid biting it into position; this can damage it.
• Removal: Pull evenly from the back molars on both sides to prevent cracking or warping.
• Never force it: If it doesn’t fit, check for debris or distortions in the retainer, and contact our office if you can’t get it seated.
• Daily rinse: Rinse under cool or lukewarm water every time you remove it.
• Brush gently: Use a soft toothbrush and liquid soap. Avoid toothpaste that can be abrasive and cause scratches.
• Soak weekly: Use a retainer cleaning solution (like Invisalign cleaning crystals, Polident, or any other denture cleaner) about once a week.
• Optional: An ultrasonic cleaner is also a highly effective option to help remove buildup and maintain clarity.
• Avoid hot water, dishwasher or alcohol-based products as they may warp or damage retainer.
• Use a case: Always store in a protective case when not in your mouth.
• Keep away from heat: Don’t leave it in the car, near a heater, or in hot water.
• Do not wrap retainers in napkins or tissues: this is a common way retainers get accidentally thrown away.
• Keep away from pets: Dogs love chewing retainers.
• Remove while eating/drinking: Only drink water with your retainer in; other drinks can stain or damage it (and stain your teeth!).
• Avoid sticky or hard foods: They can distort removable retainers.
• Check for damage: Inspect daily for cracks or warping. Damaged retainers lose effectiveness.
• Dental follow-ups: Regular visits every 6–12 months help ensure your teeth remain stable.
• Replacement: Retainers wear over time. Most last 1–2 years before they need replacement.
• Bring it with you to your visits: we can check fit and assess for damage.
⭐ Pro Tip: If you skip wearing your retainer for a few days, teeth can shift quickly. If that happens, wear it full-time until it fits snugly again. If it no longer fits, make an appointment to see us immediately.
