Congratulations on your new dental implant! Proper maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and health of your implant. Follow these guidelines to care for your implant effectively:
• Brushing: Brush your teeth at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Pay special attention to the implant crown, abutment, and surrounding gums.
• Flossing: Floss daily to remove plaque and debris from between your teeth, including around the implant, ensuring you only use SATIN or GLIDE floss. Regular floss may shred around the implant and cause inflammation.
• Waterpik: Can be helpful to flush out debris around the implant. This is to be used in combination with flossing. If using, use the LOWEST setting.
• Regular Check-Ups: Attend regular dental check-ups and cleanings every three to six months, or as recommended by your dentist. Regular visits allow your dentist to monitor the health of your implant and surrounding tissues.
• X-rays: Bitewing radiographs every year and periapical radiographs every 5 years.
• Occlusal (Bite) Protection: Annual check of the bite, which may necessitate minor adjustments to ensure minimal pressure on the implant from the opposing teeth.
• Avoid Hard Foods: Be cautious with hard or sticky foods that can potentially damage your implant crown or abutment.
• Limit Sugary Foods: Minimize consumption of sugary foods and beverages to prevent plaque buildup around the implant.
• Smoking and Tobacco Use: Avoid smoking or using tobacco products, as they can contribute to implant failure and gum disease.
• Teeth Grinding (Bruxism): If you grind your teeth, consider wearing a night guard to protect your implant and natural teeth from excessive wear.
• Monitor for Issues: Pay attention to any signs of redness, swelling, pain, or unusual sensations around the implant. Contact your dentist promptly if you notice any changes or discomfort.
• Educate Yourself: Stay informed about proper implant care and follow any specific instructions provided by your dentist for your individual case.
• Protect Your Investment: Maintain good oral hygiene and follow-up care to maximize the lifespan of your dental implant.
By following these post-operative maintenance instructions and maintaining regular dental care, you can help ensure the success and longevity of your dental implant.
